Scene on Campus: Dancing with the Students at St. Mary’s University

Lane Swenson, a junior business management major and international relations minor at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, teaches ballroom dance weekly to everyday students who want to learn something new.

Swenson began dancing as a teenager and started teaching classes a few semesters ago through the fitness center, hoping the students will find confidence in learning how to move and to dance.

Swenson and his students will perform a free Showcase on May 1, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. in the Bill Greehey Arena.

Baking on tradition: India Bray whips up Chocolate Pecan Pie

India Bray bakes her family’s traditional Chocolate Pecan Pie and shares how much the recipe means to her. Bray is a senior sociology major at St. Mary’s University and has enjoyed cooking with her mother and grandmother since a very young age.

Chocolate Pecan Pie

Ingredients:
• 1/3 C butter
• 3 eggs
• 1 C corn syrup (Karo)
• 2/3 C sugar
• 1/3 C cocoa
• 1/4 tsp salt
• 1 C pecans + more as needed

Directions:
Butter pie plate and press the crust lightly to create a the shell. Set this aside.
Next, melt the butter in a microwave. Once it is completely melted, slowly stir in cocoa until there are no lumps. Set this aside to cool.
In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and blend in the corn syrup and salt. Add the cooled butter mixture and stir. Add pecans and stir until everything is mixed evenly.
Pour into pie shell and add extra pecans as needed to fill in any gaps.
Bake 50 minutes @ 350 degrees Fahrenheit, checking periodically.

Lily Gutierrez, a senior psychology major at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, has not only mastered this balance, but is also a full-time mom to her one-year-old dog, Kai.

Garcia, a senior psychology major at St. Mary’s University, has participated in Rattler Awakening three times before becoming Music Staff head, a role she enjoys because of her love for the retreat and passion for music.

Media production student ready to learn, nervous

I’m both nervous and excited to begin the second semester of my senior year. I’m hoping to use this final time of my college career to catch up on things I still need to learn before going out into the “real” world. It’s also a time during which I am reflecting on my past four years at St. Mary’s and expressing gratitude for all I’ve experienced here.

I am excited to have another creative project-based course. I’ve never worked much with audio or video editing, so these are two aspects of the class I am excited to gain more experience with.

Similar to graphic design two years ago, I’m aware that this course will be quite a bit of work and time spent outside of class completing assignments. Although this is intimidating, these assignments are the basis of much of what I’ve learned thus far as an English-Communication Arts major.

Because I work-study at the Mac Lab, I know it will be convenient for me to finish assignments and work on projects for the class. In the past few years, I have also improved my time management and planning skills, so I know this will also make it possible for me to succeed in this course.

For my career in the communication and creative fields, this is a great course to gain experience with interviewing others, creating and editing media.

I am so happy to be able to participate in this course and have the opportunity to learn more about the broad field I hope to pursue. It’s exciting to gain experience in areas where I know I need improvement and spend time getting to know my classmates.
